About the First Lady: 2 Perspectives

Sunday, I ran across two very interesting articles regarding First Lady Michelle Obama. Generally, I pass on any news or articles regarding the First Lady’s appearance. But this one struck the curiosity in me, so I pointed and clicked to read, Glamorous Michelle Obama: Full-time Makeup Artist in White House, written by Cathryn Friar. Then I pointed and clicked to read, Why Does Michelle Obama Drive People Crazy?, written by Harold Pollack. After reading both, I thought in shear wonderment as to how the First Lady could be perceived so differently using such different criteria on which to justify opinions and conclusions.

Glamorous contends that the First Lady has been made over to have a more “natural and polished look”. Behind the “transformation” suggested by Friar, is make-up artist Ingrid Grimes-Miles, who reshaped “her seriously wicked eyebrows” and added “diva false eyelashes” to go along with “a trendy designer wardrobe”.  All resulting in a completely different look today than during the campaign. Frair concludes by saying:

…we all want our First Family to have all they need to represent us well home and abroad. But Michelle Obama needs to prove she is more then someone who is simply a fashion icon. Many of us still view her as having a very complicated and difficult personality that includes being unpatriotic, quite angry with racist overtones, and definately bitter – all qualities that are completely unacceptable in a First Lady. Do they have reinventing stylists for this as well? Maybe.

In asking the question, Why Does Michelle Obama Drive People Crazy?, Pollard acknowledges that he does not know the First Lady or at least does not remember ever meeting Michelle Obama even though their paths could have crossed at Princeton, Harvard, or the University of Chicago.  But , he wonders why “this mild-mannered person drives otherwise-sane people crazy”. From her biceps to fashion, there seems to be a neverending story or fascination with who the First Lady is or is not. But, as he says, Americans “prefer our first-ladies to be cardboard icons rather than as the actual human beings they are”.

Pollard further states of the First Lady that she:

goes on with life as if there are sometimes difficult trade offs but no inherent contradiction among these different identities and goals. This drives some people crazy. As my mother might say, they’d better get used to it.

Regardless of where one might stand regarding the First Lady – to the right or to the left – ther is one thing that is a constant. Michelle Robinson Obama, the First Lady of the United States is the most famous, most recognized, most talked about, and even the most dissected woman in the entire world.

Hmmm…, if I were in her shoes, I’d have a full-time make-up artist just because doing so would certainly just drive people crazy. But, that’s just me…
