First Lady Michelle Obama’s Poetry Slam… I mean “Jam”

I saw this photo of First Lady Michelle Obama over at Oliver Willis.
Please don’t let Sandra Rose get wind of this, but White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers made a clarification and emphasized that the appropriate term for whatever happened tonight at the White Hous is a “poetry jam” not a poety “slam”.
“Slam is a competition,” she noted. “There will be no competition.”Desiree Rogers vis CBS News
We stand corrected.
From Oliver Willis:
“They had some sort of poetry jam session at the White House. Not a fan of poetry. Am a fan of Michelle Obama.”First Lady Moment of Zen
From Politico.com
First Lady Michelle Obama said, “I wanted to do this from Day One! … to stand in this house… and hear some poetry and the spoken word. … Enjoy, be loose and let’s start the show.”
About 200 guests were there and the entire evening will be broadcast later on HBO.
From the White House:
Tonight, the President and the First Lady will host an evening celebrating poetry, music and the spoken word. This event is designed around the theme of dialogue, showing how dialogue is important in every aspect of who we are as Americans and as human beings, and demonstrating how communication is a constant throughout the ages. The hope is also that this evening’s gathering helps ensure that all voices are heard, particularly voices that are often not heard. We are fortunate to have a wide variety of upcoming and legendary performers such as Joshua Bennett, James Earl Jones, Eric Lewis, Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio, Mayda Del Valle and Esperanza Spalding.
