Conservative columnist Michelle Malkin decided to weigh in on the first lady’s commencement speech at the University of California at Merced. Malkin had a particular challenge with Mrs. Obama encouraging graduates to “give back.”

She highlighted a previous Bloomberg.com article illustrating the Obama’s philanthropic habits over a four-year period:
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and his wife Michelle gave ,772 of the .2 million they earned from 2000 through 2004 to charities, or less than 1 percent, according to tax returns for those years released today by his campaign…The Obamas made their church, Trinity United Church of Christ, one of the biggest beneficiaries of their philanthropy, donating ,500.
She did not comment on the following assertion made in the article:
The Obamas’ giving pattern is consistent with that of most other Americans, said University of Georgia Professor Russell James, who has studied the issue.
